HAIR UPDATE – 10 Weeks Post

feb15 3

Hello ladies

I neglected my hair a lot over the last month. I was determined to be very good on all fronts by eating well, exercising, having a good work/life balance and all that. It was all going well until I began have severe headaches in mid January and constantly felt tired with zero appetite. I thought I was just stressed out and my solution was that if I worked harder I would get more things done and then I would be able to relaxed more and I would feel better. Well my strategy failed and a few trips to the hospital later it turns out I had malaria and a severe case of typhoid.   It took a whole month for it all to go away but I thank God for good health. I am just relieved that I am able to get back on top of things. With all of that, hair care took a major back seat. Just before I began to feel unwell, I had started my wig regimen so my hair was in box braids. I only cleaned my scalp and moisturised and sealed my three times in a month. My hair certainly felt drier than normal and my ends took a bit of a bashing.   Also with the constant headaches I could not sleep with a scarf on. I covered my pillow with a satin fabric which probably helped a little.

If my hair was not in box braids it would have been catastrophic for me because I did not have the strength to detangle and moisturise and seal regularly. I am just glad that I had coincidentally put my hair away just before I began to feel unwell.

RECAP OF MY WASH DAY

I washed my hair as soon as I felt well enough. On this wash day I pre-pooed with coconut oil, shampooed with Creme of Nature Argan Oil Shampoo. I did a tea rinse followed by a protein and moisture mix deep condition. I air dried after applying my Aphogee green tea leave in conditioner and s-curl.

BIG TRIM

I took the pictures in this post and decided I needed and wanted a trim so I took off three inches. I thought I would be hesitant but I just chopped away happily. I didn’t want to hang on to thin ends and my hair looks better overall.  I now have to give my hair a good dose of TLC to preserve my ends and avoid needing any major trims for a while.  I didn’t take any pictures of my hair afterwards but it is about an inch past waist length.

GOING FORWARD

I feel I need to update my regimen a little bit. I have a lot of texture in my hair and after thinking things over I have decided to

  • Use a heavier oil to seal . I will now seal with olive oil instead of coconut oil.
  • Be more thorough when detangling. I intend to work in smaller sections.
  • Reduce the protein content of my deep conditioner mix. I now leave more texture in my hair when I texlax and my deep conditioner should reflect this.

EMAILS

I received an email from a lady who I believe wanted to share her progress with me. Just as i was about to open it sort of vanished.   I don’t know how this happened. I have also spoken to some of my clients who sent me emails which I did not receive. I have gotten through most of my back log and if you haven’t heard back from me kindly resend your emails.

What has been happening with your hair ladies? Please share your updates.
The next post will be a hair style pictorial and I hope you’ll visit again soon.

Happy hair journey

I’m sorry you were ill Lade and I’m glad your much better. Your hair definitely looks thicker and better without thin ends. I need to cut mine but I’ve been hesitant for no reason. Lol! I’d probably do it soon.

      Hey Hilda
Thank you sooooo much. I understand about being hesitant. When I cut off the first three inches I thought I would be freaked out but surprisingly I felt calm and was eager to carry on with the other sections.
I think it was seeing how good my ends looked after I cut it that made me super happy.
So when ever you feel ready to trim your hair I am sure you’ll be happy afterwards.

Sorry to hear that you were ill, Lade. Thankfully, you are feeling better. Your regimen changes look great. Have you ever tried detangling in the shower? I would like to know your thoughts on it.

      Hello DTTH
Thank you so much, I am certainly grateful for my health.
Ive started with the changes and now seal with olive oil. My hair feels a lil weighed down but id rather have it that way than have it dry and breakage prone.
I did try detangling in the shower earlier on in my journey. It just didn’t work for me. I get the feeling that this may work better for natural haired ladies.
When my hair was between shoulder and APL I could wash it loose in sections. once I hit BSL it was tangles central unless I washed it in braids.
So my methods of detangling has evolved over the years and will probably continue to evolve.
when and how do you detangle ?

I’m glad you’re doing much better!!! Your hair looks gorgeous and I’m certain it looks just as gorgeous post-trim. Keep taking good care of yourself and get you strength up. Don’t rush into things….they can wait. Health first.

Thank you much Divachyk. I am glad I did the trim and yes I think it looks better now.
I am certainly being better to myself after learning the hard way that I cant do it all.

Well done on your stretch. 32 weeks post!!!! you are a brave woman to manage the textures. 🙂

    Hi Lade! 😀
Glad that you are well and healthy now!!! And can I just say that your hair looks WAY fuller!!! I’m fangirling over your hair right now lol. Anyways, I successfully completed my first 2 month stretch since I began my hair journey and the amount of my new growth was very surprising! All was rainbows and sunshine until three days ago.. sadly, I experienced a set back .. I tried out a new leave-in because the one I always used was out of stock at the store, and guess what? My hair shed like crazy! I’m really depressed right now because I don’t know what to do to recover my hairs former health, please advise me 🙁

      Hey Island girl
As always thank so much for the compliments.
Well done on your stretch and its a shame about the shedding. I can be sure that it was caused by the product but it is certainly wise for you to stop using it.
I have written a post about shedding.
You can search for it using the button on the top right side of the blog.
      I hope it helps

your hair is just gorgeous! sorry about the illness dear… i wish i could have the courage to do such big trims i dont really like the fact that the more my hair is getting longer the ends keep thinning. I’m also 10wks post and will be relaxing soon.

Thank you so much Juditherese. Thank God I am very well now.
Sorry about your ends< my advise would be that you give your ends a lot of attention and handle it very gently. Also try to identify when you experience breakage the most....eg is it on what days, during the week, when you comb, etc . when you identify when you experience breakage you can then try pinpoint the cause and find a solution. If you are scared of big trims you can always do little trims....far less scary Hope you have a drama free relaxer day. x Lade

I am glad you are better Lade. Although I never comment, I love your blog. I started my hair journey only last year and it’s inspiring to see how long hair can grow. My aim is only Armpit length texlaxed hair though. At most, slightly longer. I don’t think I can commit to anything longer than that 🙂 Keep up the great work.

Thank God for good health. Good to hear that you are well and bouncing.

As for me, I have decided to give up on this Hair journey thing. I started the journey in December 2013 and I have to confess that my hair has grown shorter and weaker since I started the hair journey. Before starting, I experienced mild breakage and my hair was a little below shoulder length but now it has gone above shoulder length and breaks off easily especially when I wash.

Thank you for all the information you have shared with us. God bless you

Hi Lade, I’m glad to tell you that you have been my hair model for the past 8 months and I have seen great improvements on my hair though I have had some setbacks cos naturally my hair is crazily full but couldn’t keep up the length and I used every relaxer you can imagine till I met ur blog n began texlaxing…I will like to hear your opinion on dreading my hair cos my work is so time consuming and I’m not so comfortable on wigs so I was thinking of locking my hair…do u think it could cause a great setback cos I v no idea of d materials they use in keeping d hair locked and will I still be able to continue sealing and all that…thanks
